This morning I woke up and went to a foster training. Each year I have to do a certain number of credits in order to keep my foster certification. Today I went to a training about Transracial Adoption. It is about adoption families that adopt kids from another race.
It is important that if you adopt a kid that is from a different race that the kids culture, traditions, religion, and food are made an important part of your family life. They did a few activities that were moving. They had us write down 5 different things we considered important (family, friends, pets, work, neighbors) and then we had to get rid of one of them by crumbling one of them up. Then a second and a third and fourth and finally a fifth. Then they asked how we felt if we lost all those things. That is what happens to foster kids. They lose everything (their family, friends, pets, school, neighbors, teachers) when they get removed from their parents and get put with a foster family. It is a hard exercise to do.
Then they asked for volunteers to talk about something they have lost. No one was putting their hand up so I did. I spoke about losing my previous foster kid. Yes, tears were spilled.
It was a good training.
Until tomorrow...
A blog about my life with rheumatoid arthritis and all that goes along with it. The ups and downs. The highs and lows. The laughter and the tears. Sounds so dramatic, doesn't it?!

UPDATE ON HAPPI
Well, Happi was much better today. She ate tremendously and seemed to balance better. I think we are entering a phase where she has good days and not so good days. I will hope for more good days. I am worried about the cut on her little paw. When she tries to stand up, the cut keeps opening. The vet says he isn't worried about her getting an infection. I keep cleaning it with alcohol and try to keep gauze on it but she keeps taking it off.
I have been taking Lucky for longer walks to get her weight down. She gained a pound since her last check in at the vets. I think she needs more sustained exercise. As do I!

TIME TO BE HAPPI'S PROTECTOR
This is a very hard post to write. If you are the type of person that things make you depressed, you may not want to read this.
My dog Happi has been living with me for 15 years. Her 15-1/2 year birthday is May 5th. That is the date she came to America. Happi was born in Palau and was a street dog. All dogs in Palau are street dogs and the people in Palau feed the dogs on their porches. Happi was hit by a car when she was about one year old. A visiting microbiologist saved her life because Palau doesn't have a veterinarian able to do surgery. My veterinarian at the time worked with the Humane Society program that went into rural areas to spay and neuter animals. She just happen to be arriving in Palau and saw Happi. She redid the surgery on Happi's leg and removed the whole leg and shoulder. She also spay her. Then she put Happi on a plane (or planes) for three days to get to America.
Once she got to America I got the call "would you be interested in a cute dog named Happi?" You see my dog Taiko had just passed away while my veterinarian was in Palau. Taiko had stomach cancer. I said fine bring Happi over and that is how I got Happi. Of course Happi never left. Happi is the happiest and chillest dog ever. She wants every dog in the dog park to be her friend and loves every person. Happi has always been my protector during difficult times. When she was 8 years old I got her a sister named Lucky. After a few years, they are now best buddies.
Happi has been having a hard time for the last year. Her kidneys don't work so well. Her hips don't work so well. Her front leg doesn't work hardly at all. She can hardly hear and I think her vision is going. She is having a hard time standing up and staying up. She can't walk hardly at all anymore.
Now, it is my turn to make a decision. I have to decide when and if it is time to be compassionate and let Happi pass on. I am not ready yet but the time may be nearing. I have to think of her and not of my feelings of sadness and fear and pain because I know she will be my forever protector and stay on this earth as long as she thinks I need her. It is my turn to be Happi's protector.

GOT MY REAL ID FINALLY
Today I drove about one hour to a DMV office where I could get an appointment before my license expires next week. I arrived before my appointment time but they let me in. At first there was some confusion about whether I filled out the online application or not. I knew I did but the woman kept hearing that I didn't. I had another person help me and got it sorted. I had all my documents ready and moved from window to window. I only had to sit and wait about 15 minutes for my number to be called. The woman who assisted me was super nice. Plus she commented on how much weight I lost since my last drivers license 20 years ago! I was taking 20 mg of prednisone then and was puffed up like the Michelin man.
I passed my vision test easily with my new glasses and lenses. Then I went over to get my temporary license and get my photo taken. The man in charge of the photo booth was hysterical. I absolutely love people who love their jobs. He says he hears the DMV announcements in his sleep! I said after my 30 minutes in the office I was able to repeat the announcements already. He thought that was funny. I hope my photo was decent. I have to wait 2-3 weeks for my Real ID to arrive.
Then I got home and made a last minute appointment for Lucky to get her bordetella and rabies shots, nails done and anal glands cleaned. I had to make it last minute because I realized that I had until Sunday to pay for her City license or I had to pay a large fine. So Lucky and I dashed over to the Vet's office and got super lucky with free street parking. Lucky was a champ but I thinking she is sleeping now from the excitement.
Now I am making roasted romanesco and broccoli. It is so easy to cut them up and pop them in the oven with olive oil and spices. I love roasted veggies.

THE WIRE IS FIXED
The phone company came today and checked out the downed wires in my neighbor's backyard. Over the past few days we had the cable company and the electric company. We narrowed it down to the phone company.
The man from the phone company looked at the wires and assessed pretty quickly that the wire that went to my house was a dead line. I was not convinced and made him prove it to me before he cut it. He showed me that there was a new wire and he cut it. Then I made him prove it to me again after he cut it. I wanted to make sure both my phone lines worked before he left. I may seem suspicious but I have heard "trust me" from technicians before and then the (fill in the blank) doesn't work the minute they pull away in their truck. Once my wire was cut, he proceeded to reattach my neighbor's wire. Then I asked him to go on my roof and remove the dangling wire from where he cut it. I didn't want to see that dangling wire every time I looked out my window. Then he pulled the truck around and cut the dangling wire from the pole at my request.
Once it all looked neat and tidy, the telephone man took off. Yes, we had a long conversation about corgi's and corgi con. Who doesn't like a corgi? Who doesn't like a corgi running on the beach?

IT IS A MOUSE
The pest guy came today to check out my pest problem. He looked at the area by the neighbor's chickens and once again there is a hole. I need to discuss this with my neighbor but first we need to deal with the downed wire situation.
Then he went into the garage and checked all the areas. He only saw the mouse poop in the box that I found. His theory is that the mouse got in and made a home in the box and left. There is no evidence that he was anywhere else. Fingers crossed.
He set the trap outside again. The trap was tripped but no mouse was caught. I think we have a Ratatouille situation going on. The mice are too smart.
I made an awesome soup this evening. It is Tuscan Kale Soup. It is so tasty and so quick to make. I just orzo in a soup.

NEW GLASSES
I went to pick up my new glasses. Okay as we discussed before, they are the same frames but new lenses. I can see the smaller print now and will probably pass my vision test when I go for my Real ID this week. If I wasn't in such a hurry I may have gotten other frames but I was in a super hurry to get these glasses in time for my vision test.

WHO OWNS THE WIRE?
I had to do another road trip today and I was super tired when I got back. I had to wake up at 4:15am and that is not my favorite hour to open my eyes unless it is to get up and pee and go back to sleep.
When I got home my neighbor pointed out that a wire came off my house and his house. He thought it was an electric wire so he called the electric company. They came and it wasn't their wire. They said it was the cable company's wire. I called the cable company and they made an appointment for Saturday. Late this afternoon a cable guy rang my doorbell and told me the wire was not the cable company's. He said call the electric company. At this point it was feeling like Hot Potato! I called the electric company and I have an appointment for Tuesday. If it is not the electric company's, I don't know who to call next!
I can't wait to see who owns the wire and when it will be fixed. My neighbor is being really nice about it.

ARTHRITIS SYMPOSIUM
Tonight I went to an Arthritis Symposium. There was a Rheumatoid Arthritis doctor who spoke and some activities to do.
First the doctor spoke about RA. Most of the information I knew and could have given the talk myself. Then he started talking about setting goals. That was when I realized this talk was about how to set goals and how to communicate them to your physician. We talked about our goals as a breakout group and how we could attain those goals. We talked about what difficulties and what we would talk to our doctor about in an appointment. We talked about communication with family, friends and people at work.
The most interesting part were the other people at the symposium. There was a couple (he had psoriasis and she had RA), an older woman and a very vibrant and talkative woman. The older woman, it turns out, needs to find a new doctor since her doctor spends only 5 minutes with her in her doctor appointments. The woman of the couple is about to start Xeljanz so I was interested in her thought process in choosing this medicine. The talkative woman was VERY talkative. She is not taking any medication because she is afraid to take any medication. I find this approach very interesting but if she wants to white-knuckle her RA flares, bless her. That is not for me.
Anyway, I am glad I went. It was nice to be around others with RA and be able to talk about it without getting the "oh poor you" look. We laughed so hard and told our stories.

SHE THINKS I AM YOUNGER
Today I went to the bank to do some banking and I stopped to talk to my favorite teller. We talk about all kinds of stuff but the main thing we talk about is the show Bob 💗 Abishola. It is a show on TV about a guy who falls in love with a woman from Nigeria. As you can imagine there are cultural differences. It is a comedy and I find it very funny. The reason the bank employee and I speak about this TV show is that she is from Nigeria also. It is interesting hearing about Nigeria from someone who lived there and has family that lives there.
Anyway, today we were talking about the TV show and for some reason I mentioned my age. She looked in shock and said that she thought I was 10 years younger. I thought she was kidding but she said she was serious. I have always said that spending my days in sneakers, jeans and T-shirts keeps me young.
It was a nice thing to hear. Now, when they card me for buying alcohol because they really think I am too young then I will believe I have that Benjamin Button disease and I am aging backward.

I have been working on this puzzle for two months now. Okay not every day but periodically. I am getting further but I am still not even half way through. I have to work on it more. This puzzle is really hard. I need to work on one of my easier puzzles next. This one is taking too long.

GOT MY CAR BACK
I was so excited today when the dealer called to say my car was fixed. I have a new clutch, brake pads, hydronic lifts for my trunk, and some engine part that had come loose. Of course my car husband checked my fluids and tire pressure. The car is running well. It is so weird to have a new clutch, it is so smooth. It is only my third clutch in 17 years and 90,000 miles.
I also got Happi’s test results back. Her kidney function has not gotten worse since Jan. That is good news. I know she has kidney disease but it isn’t progressing at this time. She is such a sweetie!

TAXES PART ONE
Today I started my taxes. I got out the card table and chair. I got together the stuff I need to do my taxes. I mapped out how many days it will take me to do it. I have three full days set aside. It probably won’t take me that long but I can only work on taxes for so long before I need a break. I basically bribe myself to do it. It is a lot of prep work since I work for myself.
I got about 1 hour worth of work done today.

GOT RID OF STUFF
Since I still have the rental car, I decided it would be of good use to fill it up with the items I want to donate. So I took 5 bags of clothes, an arm full of coats, a clock, picture and large wine holder down to the charity and BAM it is gone. I am SO happy to have the room again. A few things I wanted to take they would not take so I need to dispose of them. I also saw some mice poop in the bottom of the box of some stuff so I need to call the pest guy.
I love getting rid of stuff!

VALENTINE’S DAY
I know today is Valentine’s Day but I actually forgot until sister-in-law thanked me for my nieces Valentine’s Day card. I sent cards to my little niece and nephew and my friend’s daughters and my foster son but other than that Valentine’s Day was no big deal this year. Very low key.

MOVIE NIGHT DOWNTON ABBEY
Tonight was movie night with the girls. We got takeout food and settled in to watch a movie. We started out watching a Captain Fantastic. We thought it was a comedy but we didn't get much further than the killing and skinning of a dear before we changed it to Downton Abbey.
Downton Abbey, although not a comedy, had enough giggles to satisfy us for Galentine's Day. A day of female friendships. Of course Downton Abbey was fantastic. Lady Grantham is the best.
First thing this morning I took Happi to the vet. It was super stressful. I gave her the anxiety medicine one hour before we got in the car. I had the rental car with 4 doors and I thought it would be easier. I got her in the backseat and she immediately peed. Then she was so anxious she would not sit or lay down. I tried to drive but she slid down and almost choked herself. I had to pull over three times to move her. I finally put her on the floor of the passenger side and held her there while she cried and screamed. It took me 20 minutes to drive about 1.5 miles.
I got her there and she calmed down. The doctor saw her and did a kidney test and cut her nails. He tried to take her blood pressure but she was so stressed her blood pressure was sky high. She sat in my lap the entire time at the doctor's office; this is something she has never done. At 25 lbs she is not a lap dog. I finally calmed her down enough to take her blood pressure again and it was lower and we could leave.
I will get the results tomorrow. She has been asleep all day from the stress and medicine.

PHYSICAL THERAPY DAY #1
I finally started physical therapy. Since my car is in the shop, I took the bus to physical therapy. I got there very early and had time to sit and read. My therapist was very nice. She thinks I just really injured my back above where I injured it 35 years ago.
She poked and prodded to the point where I was feeling nauseous. Then she showed me exercises and put me on a heating pad. Since I have been through physical therapy a number of times before and through back physical therapy, she was really good at talking to me at my level. I am not a newbie at PT. I have my marching orders to do my exercises but not to the point of pain.
I am also attending back school. I am interested in what this will entail. But I will be a good patient and attend.
This morning I realized that I don't have my car. So I had to take the bus all the way across town. I called the car place and told them I had not checked my calendar and I screwed up. I did need a rental car while my car is in the shop because tomorrow I have to take Happi to the vet. So I had to jump on two buses and go all the way across town again and pick up a rental car. Luckily they had a small car for me to rent. My garage is REALLY small. Once they rented me an SUV and I had to grease the sides to get it in the garage.
Now I am getting the house cleaned up for movie night tomorrow night.

NEW CLIENT
I am excited! I had an interview with a potential client today. It sounds positive but I hear I am up against two other people.
Then tonight I signed a contract with a person who I worked with years ago but now she is with another organization so she called me to work with her. Yay!
I also sent a proposal to another person who I worked with before and now is with another organization. Now I just have to wait and see.
I may be very busy soon.

DECOMMISSIONING CHRISTMAS DAY 2
Today I continued on my quest to decommission Christmas (finally!) and sort through the Christmas bins in my garage. Yes, I have a lot of Christmas stuff. Some I have collected and bought and some I inherited and a lot has been given to me since friends and family know I LOVE Christmas. I took a photo before I started the sorting and cleaning out. It doesn't have everything but I hope it will be much more organized at the end. Oh, and you can't see all the stuff I have to fit in these three bins off to the side of this photo. Oy!
A few years ago I went through two of the bins so I don't expect to find too much to toss out in those two bins but the third bin I could not get myself to tackle so that bin will probably have a lot to throw out/donate.
So far I got rid of 6 strands of Christmas lights that didn't work. That made a bunch of room in a bin. I can't wait to get rid of more stuff. Tomorrow is another day of this project.

DECOMMISSIONING CHRISTMAS DAY 1
I started taking the Christmas decorations down to the garage today. I had been holding off since I tweaked my back. The last thing I needed to do was injure my back again and be laying flat in bed. I decided to move the items in small, light batches very slowly. It was tedious but I didn't hurt myself so I guess it worked.
I also made soup. I made a delicious Potato, white bean and Chard soup. It was supposed to be kale soup but I only had chard. Hey, a green is a green. It was really tasty and I cooked it in the slow cooker. I was a little nervous at hour 3 that the potatoes would not cook all the way but at hour 6 they were cooked thoroughly. I love my slow cooker.
My friend has been trying to get me to buy an Instant Pot. I did a little research and I am not sure if instant pot and vegans are a good match. I looked at the list of items people cook in them: chili, roasts, cheese cake, soup, rice, eggs, yogurt, and whole chicken. Of all these things I would make three and I have a slow cooker to make the chili and soup and a rice cooker to make rice. The one thing I did see that I liked was the vegan mac and cheese. But I am not sure I would buy a machine just to make mac and cheese.
Anyway something to think about. The soup was delicious and will be all week long.

Until tomorrow...

NEW GLASSES, OH, REALLY NEW LENS
I went down to the eye wear place and ordered my new glasses. Well, they are my same frames but with new lenses. I will be able to see the far away small print again. Even better I will be able to read instructions without taking off my glasses again. I am not sure why my eyes got so bad this time around but I guess it is age. I thought your eyes were supposed to slow down on how fast they got worse when you got older buy mine are not. My feet are getting smaller and my eyes are getting worse. What is next?
My errands took up most of the day.
Oh, I saw an Uber driver make a left turn from the middle lane, cut off the car in the left lane, almost run over a person in the YELLOW cross walk while turning into oncoming traffic on a one-way street going the wrong way. It is amazing how you just stand there in shock watching this almost tragedy happen because you can't believe the stupidity of some people. The car in the left lane who was cut off just leaned on his horn but it didn't stop the Uber from turning into oncoming traffic. Luckily there was no car in that lane and no one got hurt but the Uber (and anyone coming the other way) was very lucky.

LONG DRIVE
I had a really long drive today. I had to go to a court thing. It all turned out good. The long drive was torture on my back on the drive home. Or maybe it was the sitting and waiting because you know (if you have ever been to court) there is a window of time for your case so you sit and wait. The seating is not comfortable either. So one of those two things irritated my back so the ride home was less than pleasant.
Physical therapy starts next week. Hooray!

VISION TEST
I went to the eye doctor early this morning. It was time to get my eyes checked. It turns out that my eyes have changed a lot. They couldn't find the prescription that my glasses are currently. It may have been prescribed by my old eye doctor. Anyway, I hope this new prescription will help me see clearer. I just need the new lenses before my vision test for my driver's license renewal. I can see street signs but if they give me a vision test with the letters I may have some problems.
I am going to get the prescription filled ASAP.

WEBINAR
I spoke to a referral today and she wants me to assist in teaching a webinar. I am pretty excited about this opportunity. I have taught seminars and trainings before but never a webinar. She was referred to my by a colleague.
I warned her that I am not "straight-laced, serious" teacher. I just can't be. It is not in my nature. I am a more folksy speaker. She said that is why she likes me. I talk to the people rather than talk at the people.
This is such a experience.

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS
Darn I thought I posted this a few days ago. Oh well...
I started taking the Christmas decorations down and they are all over the place. The guest room is covered with stuff. Since it is February I think it is time to decommission Christmas but I worry I will injure my back again. I am doing a little at a time taking a few items off the tree and putting them on the fireplace. Then taking a few items out of the bathroom and putting them on the dining room table. At this rate I will be Christmas-free by Independence Day.

NEW GIG
I had an interview for a gig today. I was excited for it but I am not sure it went very well. It was a dry and flat meeting over the phone. I will be surprised if I get a call back. But then tonight I got an email from another client hiring me for a project.
I am excited to get new projects to work on and new people to meet.

SUPERBOWL DAY
I made another soup today. It is White Bean and Barley Soup with Tomatoes and Greens. The thing I like about this soup is that it is easy and fast to make. It is a hearty soup and I love barley! It was good for the Superbowl.
It was a good game to watch but the team I was routing for didn't win. The half-time show was fun to watch. So for me it was a good Superbowl.

BACK PAIN DAY #9
I went on a road trip today. I had to go visit someone for a few hours. Unfortunately my back was killing me while I was driving. Driving a manual transmission is not ideal when your back hurts. Lifting my leg is like a knife in my back each time. Luckily most of it was on a freeway.
